Single Mothers

Digital Literacy Program

The Single Mother’s digital literacy program empowers young single mothers in South Sudan to handle financial hardship, emotional distress, school dropout, family rejection, absent fathers, social stigma, and livelihood insecurity.

The Program addresses labor-market exclusion of women—especially single mothers—by providing certified training that equips them with essential digital and workplace skills.

Digital Literacy for Empowerment and Opportunity

The objective is to foster the capacity to build their personal resilience, improve their socio- economic status, and provide them with the means to obtain professional employment—cultivating an independent, empowered self and, hopefully, creating a new empathetic and supportive community.

Access to Employment and Income Opportunities

Digital literacy gives young single mothers practical skills that open doors to employment and income opportunities. For those balancing childcare or lacking formal education, digital skills offer flexible ways to work from home or remotely. By learning to use computers, navigate the internet, and engage in online commerce, they can apply for jobs, start small digital businesses, and access freelance platforms. These skills improve their employability, reduce financial hardship, and strengthen long-term economic security

Improved Educational Continuity

Many young single mothers drop out of school due to pregnancy, caregiving, or social pressure. Digital literacy lets them continue education via online platforms, apps, and communication tools—learning at their own pace and place. This supports their goals and helps them guide their children, making digital skills a bridge back to interrupted opportunities.

Emotional and Social Support Networks

Digital literacy reduces isolation and supports emotional well-being. Single mothers facing distress, stigma, or rejection can use digital skills to join online communities, parenting groups, and mental health resources. These connections offer advice, encouragement, belonging, and resilience beyond their immediate environment.

Better Access to Essential Services

Digital literacy enables young single mothers to access essential services with greater ease and independence. With basic online skills, they can find healthcare information, apply for government programs, seek legal guidance, and manage mobile or online banking. This is especially important for mothers with limited family support or those raising children alone, as it helps them meet daily needs more efficiently and confidently.

Empowerment and Independence

By gaining digital skills, young single mothers strengthen their independence and ability to advocate for themselves. Access to reliable information about rights, health, childcare, and financial management helps them make informed decisions and reduces their reliance on others. For mothers coping with absent fathers or unstable support systems, these skills build confidence and a stronger sense of control over their lives.

Breaking the Cycle of Stigma and Poverty

Digital literacy helps break cycles of stigma and poverty by improving young mothers’ economic stability, confidence, and participation in the modern economy. As they gain skills that lead to employment or continued education, they enhance their own futures and set positive examples for their children. Over time, this contributes to shifting attitudes in the community and creating more supportive environments for single mothers.
